Leaving aside the specialised optics, one of the pieces of equipment I found most useful is a pair of gardeners' knee pads. It is surprising how often you need to kneel down to get the subject in focus and the ground is almost always at least damp. Most of the time I use only one, as evidenced by my pairs of pre-knee-pad jeans with the right knee worn through.
Second to the pads one of those gardeners' padded stools, which you can turn upside down to kneel on, is useful when you are not walking any distance, as they are very bulky. Standing on top can help with access/perspective with some subjects. You can even use them as a stool to sit on. (You read it here first!).
